Resilience Faith Perseverance Mental Health

“The hummingbird reminds us of the fierceness one possesses in the face of adversity, while navigating life’s challenges with resilience and grace. This beautiful creature also reminds us to live in the moment, so that we can pursue our passions, our joys, and fly on. That is what I strive for in our work together.” - Dr. K

Welcome!

Hi there! I go by Dr. K and I’m so glad you found me. I’m a Board-Certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist and my passion for Psychiatry stems from a desire to help individuals not just to improve clinical symptoms, but also their sense of self-worth, and overall well-being.

Every individual should be approached with compassion and empathy, and this is rooted deeply in my work. I approach your care holistically, by integrating psychotherapy, medications when clinically indicated, and guidance on lifestyle modifications.

There is a lot of information below about me, my practice approach, and details that will help you decide whether I’m the right fit for you. Please read carefully!

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you, and embark on your wellness journey together!

Who is Dr. K? … Supriya S. Kothavale, DO

I am a board-certified psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (formerly Psychosomatic Medicine). I treat children, adolescents, and adults using psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.

I approach my patients with compassion and empathy, guided by a philosophy that the therapeutic process constantly fuels healing, regardless of whether medications are being pursued. My therapeutic style is more eclectic, a mixture of psychodynamic, cognitive and interpersonal models. I will see patients for either long term treatment or for short term consultations.

I have a particular interest in treating mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, concerns relating to gender or sexual identity, trauma, women’s mental health, working with the college/graduate student and young adult population, working with the LGBTQIA+ community, but am very comfortable in treating individuals from all walks of life. Additionally, I have training and experience in treating patients with psychiatric disorders and medical illnesses that may be impacting their emotional mental health, often requiring collaboration with physicians from other medical sub-specialties, benefiting from an integrative care approach.

My approach to treatment stems from my passion in moving beyond symptom reduction, and achieving wellness in body, and in mind. In practicing what I preach, I strive to be kind to my imperfect self, prioritize my health, family, and personal growth. When I’m not working, I’m trying to enrich my life through connecting with loved ones, nature walks, lifting weights, discovering new recipes and dishes on my plant based journey, cuddling with my cats, husband, and two children, who are the light of my life.

Training

  • Medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

  • Adult Psychiatry residency training at Cleveland Clinic and Georgetown University

  • Fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY

  • Fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute

After training, I worked as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, working integratively with all pediatric specialties while providing psychiatric care to pediatric patients admitted to the hospital. I moved to Austin, TX in July 2018, and began working as a telepsychiatrist, providing psychiatric care to community mental health centers in South Texas. In 2019, I transitioned over to private practice to serve all of Austin and its surrounding cities.

I also focus on difficult life circumstances including relationship difficulties, family dynamics, trauma or job stress.

Prior to the initial appointment, you will receive forms and questionnaires through a secure portal, which allow me to better understand you and your reasons for pursuing treatment. I will review the information with you during the initial visit/s, and collaboratively work with you on a treatment approach we are comfortable with.

At the Initial Appointment

  • Obtain more detailed background information including the individual’s present symptomatology, previous psychiatric treatment, medical treatment, and relevant family and social history

  • Discuss possible diagnoses with treatment recommendations and goals to maximize wellness

  • Review evidence-based treatment options including combinations of psychotherapy, medications, as well as alternative approaches

  • Counseling around diet, exercise, and lifestyle factors that influence health (emotional/mental/physical) and wellness

A thorough evaluation may require 2-3 appointments initially, depending on the complexity of the presentation.

Psychopharmacology

  • 20 to 30 minute appointments (dependent on complexity) for medication management for various psychiatric disorders

  • adjunctive therapies such as use of supplements (ie. Omega-3 Fatty Acids, magnesium), diet, micro nutrition, meditation, and exercise are also explored

  • work collaboratively with your therapist to optimize treatment

    • regardless of whether you are in therapy, I strive to provide therapeutic support during these visits, and go beyond a symptom check-list

  • patients are typically seen every 3-4 weeks when initiating and/or adjusting medication/s

    • once the regimen has been stable, follow-ups will be gradually spaced farther apart to a minimum of once every 4 months

    • if there is a preference to have a primary care physician (PCP) take over prescribing, I am happy to facilitate this transition

Psychotherapy

  • 45 minute therapy sessions for individuals seeking psychotherapy as their modality of treatment

  • augmented with psychopharmacology if clinically indicated, assessed on an ongoing basis at each visit

  • various approaches to psychotherapy are utilized including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, insight-oriented, and interpersonal

Consultation

  • comprehensive consultations for those seeking a psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations

  • not for the purpose of establishing a physician-patient relationship or engage in ongoing treatment with me

Insurance

I do not accept health insurance of any kind, and I do not accept Medicare/Medicaid. I am considered an "Out-of-Network" provider. However, I am able to provide you statements for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. This will depend on the individual plan, whether you have any ‘out of network’ benefits, and so I cannot guarantee any reimbursement/s.

It would be helpful to contact your insurance company beforehand, and ask the following questions:

1) "Do I have Out-of-Network coverage?" e.g. would you be able to submit my bills to your insurance for reimbursement

2) "What is my deductible for mental/behavioral health coverage?" e.g. how much must you spend out of pocket before insurance begins reimbursing

3) "What is my co-insurance?" e.g. what percentage of the fee will you NOT be reimbursed

4) "What is the allowed amount for the following codes?" e.g. these are medical billing codes, and most insurances have a limit to how much they will reimburse, based on the code. This amount may differ from my fees, thus a possible difference in reimbursement.

  • 99205 (initial psychiatric diagnostic evaluation)

  • 90833, 90836, and 90838 (add-on psychotherapy codes)

  • 99213, and 99214 (evaluation/management follow-up appointment codes)

Payment

Payment will be due at the time of each visit, regardless of whether you decide to pursue reimbursement from your insurance provider.
I accept cash, check, and all major credit cards as forms of payment.
